I love working on theatre. Doing things that need to get done to put a show together. It's amazing how you seemingly have several seperate components. There is the actual actor/director group, then the costumes, the sets, makeup the lights, the sound, the props, publicity, administrative office, the actual theatre itself, the future audience. At the beginning of putting a production together, all these different elements go about their seperate ways. They do what they do...but as you go about your business and things start to happen. But it's still just a bunch of elements. The lighting team creates the light plot and then goes in the theater and connects the instruments and makes the adjustments and such...the set team begins to bring this set piece and that piece into the theatre and they start to put the pieces together and make adjustments. The pieces then get painted and they start to make since. Then you add the props to it. Add, sound, add costumes, add makeup, and finally...add the audience.
It's simply amazing...you start with an absolutely blank space. Slowly, as the different components of theatre come together...as the "real space" slowly transforms into the plane of imagination...you are taken to another world. Quite powerful...quite exciting...I love it...
All this to say...I went to the theatre today to work on building the sound system for FAT PIG, and I worked about 2.5 hours and I got alot done. But I came to a stopping point for the day where I could go no further and although, it seemed as if I had done nothing, I know I got alot done. But that is what theatre is all about. It seems as if you are only making small steps, when it fact, you are making strides of achievement. Even in all of the seperate components of theatre, before you put them all together, there is still that sense of..."Well, Gee...will this actually come together?" The answer is yes...it just takes time, patience, and at times, adapting. And when it does...it's quite magical. Even I, who is always behind the curtain...I get chills...
Theatre is such a powerful medium of communication. Because of the increased popularity of Theatre on film, my greatest fear is that theatre actually is a dieing artform. Don't get me wrong...I love theatre on film. It's awesome. It gives the opportunity to everyone to enjoy things that you can't see every day. However, it should not be a replacement. Just as your afternoon snack should only hold your hunger off until dinner but shouldn't ruin your appetite and replace dinner. Theatre on film should only hold you off until you see something live. Because, as awesome as theatre on film is...it could never replace the power and magic of seeing live theatre. In my opinion, theatre is so much more awesome than film in so many ways. We will have that debate one day, okay?
Well, I guess that's all for now. I hope everyone is doing well, and I will talk soon!! Love and huggles to all...
Keep a song in your heart and a dance in your step! Austin
