No I'm not that far north. I am up in Arcata at the moment with Anah, she has come up to visit for the first time! It's my dad's 70th birthday party tomorrow, though his birthday was over a month ago, and I'm pretty excited for that. We're going to be put to work helping things run smoothly all day, which means we have to get up in the morning UGH.
But it will be exciting and fun anyway, so there.
I've been getting really into stamping weekend over at
hh_stamping, and doing some hogsmeade activities too. Some people (*cough* lauren *cough*) should really join up and get sorted and then do Sugarquill challenges with me :B
We had dinner with my dad and his partner and his older sister and her partner, who is in town from LA for his birthday, and dinner was AMAZING (folie duce) and we talked about a lot of things including the marsh, which is one of my favorite things about Arcata.
The short version of this story is that 30-40 years ago the sewage treatment plant was getting run down, and some professors at the university said "Hey wait we have a better idea than building a new one." Their idea was to treat the water the way it's treated in nature; using ponds and bacteria and plants and wildlife to do the majority of the water filtration in a natural marsh setting. They implemented this and it is beautiful, an amazing place to walk and especially bird watch. It has a great population of snowy egrets, is my favorite animal there, plus mallards and many other birds. It's beautiful, it works, it's environmentally friendly, and it was also CHEAPER than building a new sewage treatment plant! This is my favorite story, where in the end you get everything you want because you were clever enough and put enough hard work into it, and you didn't accept the world the way it was but decided that it could be better.
Anyway I will probably have more to talk about about the party tomorrow, so STAY TUNED.
