Session 2
(Sarah is off to a Bunko game, so she was not able to join us. This was countered by John E joining us.)
We last left our merry band of adventurers in the woods after finding a goblin camp. Andrea wonders off into the woods to do some scouting. While Pathos and Aramil are sitting at the fire they hear the approach of someone. Burrow was happy to finally be nearing the end of his journey to Sharn, he could see the high tower glisten in the morning light. As he walked forward he then felt as though there was a strong tug, the morning is now middle of the night and the stars and moons are very wrong. Up a head he sees a small campfire and wonders towards it, in hope that there may be some answers. Aramil and Borrow made greetings to each other. Pathos, an adopted member of clan Helmsplitter was happy to see a Dwarf. Borrow told them of his journey and then the strange happenings of his finding himself here, he also was curious as to why the stars read such a different time then what they read last night. From what they were able to deduce Borrow has also lost 20 years, whether he was move forward of reverted as the other had been they were not able to figure out. They decide to talk and wait for morning before they move on.
As morning light appears, they break camp and move towards Helmsplitter Keep. They come across the keep around middle afternoon, the area for almost a mile around the keep has been cleared into a smooth plain, and the keep lies near a small pond. The Keep it self is not over big, a single story with battlements on the roof and solid stone work for the walls. Even from here it looks like a sturdy frontier home of a well to do land owner. They walk down the front path no even trying to hid themselves, although they are not spotted by any of the sentries. The large front windows have been broken out and crude banners hang blowing from the frames. The entrance is a sturdy double door, with one side broken in. The foyer is a grand place, yet all the art and trimmings have been ransacked or destroyed.
There is a steady sound of something alive in the keep, inhuman and angry. The smell of rotten meat and sight of bones does not give good hope for the inhabitants. The new trio notices a door to the North West in the foyer and decides that is a good a place as any to find out what is going on here. Pathos decides that since this was once his that he can enter as he pleases and barges right in. The goblins inside though have a different opinion of ownership. The group manages to take them out and then find they are in what must have been the guest quarters. Of the three rooms one is locked, they manage to pick the lock but find that the door seems to be bared on the inside. After pushing the door to find that there was a bit of furniture present behind it they are met with the foul smell of death. Lying on the bed is a body of a man, blood staining his cloths and the bed under him. Strewn about are water skins and some remnants of rations and other food stuffs. On the table in the room is a letter, a written note of his last days.
“The master left not three days ago now, the goblins came fast two days after. They were lead by a magician and a hulking brute. They may have been goblins but I did not see them. They attacked at night and killed most all the guards and servants. I and two others manage to get some of the master’s treasures. I was stabbed and I fear the wound is infected and fatal. I hope the mater comes back. “
The writing picks back up, the lettering is shaky and smeared, “It has been four days since I barricaded myself in this room. The goblins no longer try the door. Last night I heard on speak in common to another who did not sound to be goblin at all, ‘That human was right, we need to thank dat human what-his-name0’. He was answered by a gruff voice that was not goblin, ‘Mater Talnar will be pleased, I shall report this’. I think that I will sleep now, if you find this please avenge us.”
The name Talnar sounded familiar; Pathos and Aramil remembered it to be the name of the politician who was assassinated. They also recounted the story that Khalas advised them of this politician’s dramatic rise to power. He entered Sharn not but two years ago and unknown and in less than six months he was the political leader of the merchant district. There was also a rumor that he was a dragonmarked heir, but no one was ever able to confirm it.
After a short rest, the group moves on to explore the remainder of the keep, the short fight had not alerted anyone. The moved on and found a hallway, dark and silent, that lead to what might be the master quarters, Aramil was able to hear some kind of movement on the other side of the door. They flung the door open and what they found was very interesting, a goblin caster and a few of his minions. After quickly dispatching them they searched the room and found plates that were to be for a Warforged, the dwarven inscriptions say them to be a gift to Pathos Helmsplitter. Aramil and Borrow assisted Pathos into the plates, replacing the heavy steel plate with new near weightless plates.
This ended the session.
