Tonight I went to the Red Hot Chili Peppers concert at the Cape Town Stadium. I'd bought four decent stand tickets when they went on sale and had nearly forgtten about it until I heard it mentioned it on the radio, what with everything else going on. Last minute scrambling around I invited @AJVenter and DanielB from work, and @AJVenter's wife (and my dear friend) @madgurl69.
After another mad scramble to make sure we had enough bus passes as getting there wasn't going to be free like other concerts, we met up at my place and took the MyCitiBus into town along with many other fans. The atmosphere was amped up, excited; and even the queues moved along with no trouble. @alventer sorted us out for drinks and snacks when we head to our seats.
The opening act was 'Die Antwoord' - pronounced "Di Unt Voord" not "Die Ant Word" as Flea said it later, cute as that was. To say I was gobsmacked is a vast understatement to how I felt when the first too the stage and started their opening act. "Act" it certainly was with repeated costume changes and lights flashing. You would have been forgiven for thinking you were seeing Tiesto, Lish Lashes or Ministry of Sound live. Retro and heavy bass with a few decent rave-type tracks - pity about the vocals, what a squeaky voice. The "music" wasn't bad per se just definitely not a rock concert. I often wondered if I was actually in the right place.
When the 'Peppers finally took the stage, Flea's thank you of their opening act was sweet but also a little comical. Their concert was amazing though. Not much to say about the actual headliners beyond the fact that were AWESOME!!! My highlights were the sax solos, the dueling guitars and the crowd signing along with the band. I took pics until my phone died.
