we all keep things. odds and ends that remind us of certain times in our lives when we were being a certain way. when we were looking at the clock and wondering when was the next time we were going to see tomorrow, we held these things in our hands and contemplated the importance. I used to hoard everything. I kept all the little things and constantly looked for bigger things to fill up my life. Stuff. Books. Papers. Vases. rocks. fancy trays or boxes. notebooks. jewelry boxes. barrettes. nail polish. figurines. cd's. movies. clothes. animals. posters. leis. beads. boas. scraps of paper with chicken scratch. photos. flowers. tapestries. plants. candles. camping things. pens and all their pointy cousins. and then comes all the filler - like furnishings. stuff.

we all keep things in our lives as if losing them was not an option. they all mean to be there for as long as we're around. some things stay there forever, but most things end up somewhere else. when do you know when to let something get lost? when do you know when to take the plunge into throwing something into a receptacle that will eventually transport that thing onto an enormous heap of other things people decided to lose?

really, there's only one thing a person values the most. and it's the last thing that person would ever consider in their worthy troves of stuff. for most, including myself, it's the very hardest thing to polish every day and tune to perfection. it's the hardest thing to maintain, yet the most important thing in my life. it's also the most expensive thing I own, considering how much it takes to keep it going. Yet, I neglect it and watch the filth grow larger and weaker as I get older. This thing is the leader of all the stuff, and it sometimes also falls prey to the idea of being thrown away.

yet I always carry it around, as if all this meant something.
