So apparently I was on CNN today. Me, Katt, Sam, and Julian. (At this point, I'm tempted to end the entry right here and leave you all in curiosity, but I suppose I'm not that obnoxious. So.)
We were supposed to eat breakfast at the Derry Diner this morning, because its food is supercheap and tasty, but it was closed for the holidays. So we ended up at Mary-Ann's instead, which we never go to, but hey. There aren't any OTHER diners in town. So we headed to Mary-Ann's, ordered some inordinately caloric breakfasts, and chowed down happily. But then, sometime during our meals and chat about the Count of Monte Cristo, all these people with videocameras and still cameras and boom mikes (and one WMUR reporter with a microphone) crowd one-by-one into our little sectioned-off area of the restaurant.
Turns out, John McCain and Joe Lieberman are parking it there to eat some lunch. Moreover, they're eating at a table about four feet away from us -- if that. And our waitress is their waitress. "Okay," we decided, "we're never getting out of here. Ever." The cameramen and boom operators are clustered everywhere, and a good third of them are blockading our booth. A man with a very professional-looking SLR is squatting before our table, for example, and the first cameraman to arrive (from WMUR, and whom we talked to earlier because Katt wanted to know his camera model) is standing behind me. "Said you guys had a good table, didn't I?" he jokes.
We are never getting out. Across the room, across the army of paparazzish journalists, we see our waitress take the ketchup and basket of half-and-half from the table of two middle-aged women and plunk said objects on McCain's table. The blonde at the previous table drops her jaw in surprise. She wasn't drinking coffee, not that I could tell, but still. We wait about half an hour for the check, and then after paying stand up and harass the senators. (Aka, ask for autographs.) Sam is first: "Hello, Senator," she says to bomber-jacketed McCain, holding out a piece of paper placemat and red crayon. "Would you sign this?" Graciously, McCain signs in crayon. "I debated bothering you while you were eating, but..." -- she flashes the classic Sam ah-well smile -- "...you stole our waitress, so." I can't believe Sam has actually said this to him. While waiting for the check we were joking about her telling him this, but I am surprised she actually did it. Not that I should be. Sam's pretty ballsy. The presidential candidate laughs it off and Katt and I get autographs, then I get one from Lieberman, and we go. But apparently someone got us on camera, because four hours ago Julian got a call from someone saying (s)he saw us on CNN. Neat, eh?
