Sparkly or shiny?

So I finally did it, flist. I've been threatening to do it for ages (not here, but in the big bad real world) and today I followed through.

I watched Twilight.

It's requiring all the strength I have not to go out to the store and buy the book. Not because I want to or because I think it'll be especially good but... I don't know. I must. The ( Read more... )

Oh wow.

Okay, let me share my Twilight story. I was curious. I dabbled a bit in college. I read the first book and really liked it. Then i read the second one and was like, oh. OK. Then the third one and was like, wtf??? Then I couldn't bring myself to read the fourth one and instead I forced my friend to tell me what happened because I didn't think I could read it w/o gouging my eyes out.

If you want to read them, I say do it. But I wouldn't buy them. Borrow them from a friend or from the library first. And read all of them before you make any purchases. I say that because after the first one was over I couldn't even remember WHY in the world I liked it. The writing is weaksauce and the backstories on the other other vampires may be interesting but they don't connect in any way with the plot.

But that's just my two cents!

Put your fears to rest! My money is safe from her.

Am I totally confused or did you once link to something that basically said Twilight is ridiculous and stupid and let us laugh? Or was that another flister? Because now that I actually know what people are talking about, I want to read it.

I did! Here's one, and another. I've also been typing up a snarky reaction post to the movie for the past few days. :P

I did think parts of it (book and movie) were good, or had potential, but it just took itself SO. SERIOUSLY. I like that JKR knows hen to poke fun at her world, and pokes fun at the real world too. The hints of satire and gentle humor make a book about wizards flying around so much more enjoyable to digest.

It's probably part of the reason there's such venom and hatred towards Smeyer. I kind of feel it too, that she doesn't deserve the fame and recognition because she has given us a world filled with SO MUCH potential and then kind of dumped it on our doorsteps in a trash bag. I hate the fact that she thinks she's so amazing, because let's face it../she isn't. :

I remember reading the sparkly meadow scene and thinking "Um okay...no mention of how UTTERLY RIDICULOUS this sounds?" i wanted Bella to laugh or for Edward to crack a dry-wit joke. Instead I got lines like..."You're my own personal brand of heroin."*

And then I got the RAGE mixed with lulz...and arrgh.

But you know what I do love? Twilight fans who aren't insane. Four for you, you go!

*I fully realize that that quote may not be in that part of the book -- I read it two years ago, okay?!?

Oh, that heroin line was in the book. Edward and his nonsensical analogies. I wanted Bella to laugh at him and say "DUDE. YOU FREAKING SPARKLE, YOU BIG GIRL." But Bella is stupid.

I enjoyed the books for the same reason people read other trashy romance. They are addictive. I'm fairly certain that the pages were laced with crack.

The potential was there and then... nothing. The Volturi could have been amazing. Alice and Jasper had so much worth exploring. The werewolves are intriguing. Edward was sarcastic. Needed an editor change, badly :P

I think I'm kinda in love with both of you right now. I won't, you know, watch you while you sleep or trap you in the tops of trees but still. The love is there.

hee! I like your progression. And I think you're right, I'm not gonna actually spend money on them. My sister has all of them except the first one so it'd be pretty easy for me, if I don't mind waiting until summer when I'll see her again.

I'm sad she didn't connect the other vampires more. That'd would've been so excellent. But I think JKR has completely spoiled me when it comes to writing and layers and buildup and secondary characters so Meyers really doesn't have a chance with me.
