Something has to change...

"Do you see it,” she yelled at me. I looked carefully into the mirror where she was pointing at my face. I couldn’t believe she was panicking…it was just my birthmark. So it was getting a bit darker. Did she have to make such a big deal about it? Then I noticed that she wasn’t pointing at me anymore.

“You don’t think yours is serious,” she nearly screeched at me. “Well look at this.” She pointed at her own face and I leaned over looking carefully. Very faintly I could see the outline of a feather.

“Pretty,” I replied not really seeing what the problem was. It was very light, I wouldn’t even have noticed if she hadn’t pointed it out…unlike mine which was a sort of starish dark spot under my left eye. It was strange that it was getting darker but I wasn’t worried I was used to it. I actually thought it made my face a bit more interesting, drew attention to my green eyes. Very proud of those you know.

“Pretty,” she repeated. “Don’t you get it? This all started after we took that potion you made. Something is happening to us.”

“So,” I replied unimpressed, “Something was supposed to happen to us. You wanted to do it just as much as the rest of us. You blackmailed me to let you do it. And it wasn’t a potion. I do chemistry not witchcraft. I told you that stuff isn’t real. It’s all playing with natural rules. Now what are you complaining about? I told you to expect changes, we’re connecting to another plain of existence closer than we were born to it. There were bound to be changes other than what we expect. You’ll just have to live with them. I don’t see that’s there any way to undo them. Now calm down, go to class, or do whatever it is that will take your mind off of it. And don’t come complaining to me again.” She glared at me and left. Too young, I shouldn’t have let her even if she was going to expose me. What I said may have been a bit harsh. But what else could I have said to her. It was all true. She wanted to do this…if she didn’t realize that things would change that’s not my problem. I didn’t force her to do anything. It makes me wonder how the others are dealing…if they’ve seen any changes yet. We are drawing closer with another plain of existence…something has to change…something more than this birthmark.
