Kirk now realized why he had had such trouble pinning down the nature of their relationship before, because it was on the precipice of becoming something more. Someone, out of the three of them, just had to be the first to fall. Sitting there with the feeling of McCoy’s arms on him lingering, taking in the scent of sweat and aftershave, he thought that maybe he could have had something extraordinary, but now he can’t have what he can see the three of them are becoming.

This is a very bittersweet moment. I love it.

And at least one of the universes gets it right!
