Yes, this weekend was our annual local dance event, Terpsichore at the Tower, for which I always do some sort of cake subtletie to be served during the dessert revel after the second set of the evening ball.
This year's cake was a bit of an in joke. I bought a very slightly used period pavillion (medieval style tent) at the end of Pennsic last August. When talking about it, I kept referring to it as 14 inches instead of 14 feet. So thus, this years cake was a 1'=1" replica of my pavillion. (Okay, I cheated slightly and scaled it down to 12", since the 12" cake served about 80 people, whereas the 14" one would have served about 130, which seemed like overkill.)
Icing was vanilla buttercream with black fondant accents. The banner stand was made out of Pocky chocolate dipped cookie sticks, and the banner itself was sugarpaste (gumpaste) colored with markers (since I can't paint quite that finely with food color--though there are those who can).
The cake was constructed and supported like a 3 tier wedding cake. To serve it, I took the tiers apart, and slapped more icing on top of each of the lower ones after removing the supports, which looked like
this (but less blurry).
More photos, including close ups, a pic of the trifle I made out of the cake scraps and served at the pre-revel on Friday night, and pics of this year's Peep subtlties (not made by me), both Lutr's annual contribution and the 4 made during the Iron Peeps contest, can be seen here:
