Maude's past?
A conversation with pezgirl7 triggered a (mis?)remembered memory of a fic which goes something like this:
I could swear I read a fic somewhere in which Maude was raped by an "upstanding" citizen and had Ezra, and (Preston? Patrick?) Standish marries her. They have a daughter eventually, but he's killed/dies and his family runs her off. The girl dies due to their poverty, which makes Maude (who's been on edge since Ezra's birth) snap and decide that money is the solution to every problem under the Sun.
I've read "Ghost Town" by CatStandish and though it's similar, that's not it. Do you remember anything like it? Or maybe I'm combining bits and pieces of fics I read over the years??
