You know how dogs have "dog parks" where doggies can romp and play and socialize? I was thinking about how there are no "cat parks" and for good reason - pretty soon the phrase "cat park" would be a synonym for "utter mayhem." I can't imagine kitties hanging around in a cat park and playing with one another and being under "voice control" with their owners. There would be shredded flesh and shed blood and sprayed urine. Owners (those who weren't too badly shredded) would be here kitty kitty-ing for days and plucking cats out of trees and from under bushes. A cat park is one idea that even the most die-hard self-help book consumer would have to concede Won't Ever Work.
And remember the annoying fad of "purse dogs?" Thankfully I don't see those very often anymore but back in the midpoint of last decade Paris Hilton indirectly made the lives of countless tiny dogs miserable. I remember being at Jamba Juice one day and this lady carried her dog in her purse RIGHT INTO THE STORE! Ew. Get your dog hair out of my smoothie, lady! And the poor dog was trembling and looked scared out if its tiny wits. I'm sure it didn't want to be in Jamba Juice either.
But thankfully "purse cats" never caught on. I don't know any self-respecting cat who would put up with being shoved into a handbag and paraded around. The outcome would be: shredded and/or peed-in purse and most likely escaped kitty.
As a cat person, one of the things I like about cats is that it's much harder to make a cat into an accessory. And since they are by nature territorial, not pack animals, I don't HAVE to do the dog-park thing or Puppygarten or intensive socialization. Sure, people blog about their cats and produce a zillion Cute Kitty videos, but those aren't obligatory parts of owning a cat. Anastasia probably wouldn't give a shit if I never posted her picture on LJ or Facebook. And I can go to places like Jamba Juice, dash in for a smoothie, and not have to bring her along and tie her up outside because she "misses her pack." I go out the door and leave her watching squirrels. I come back and she's still absorbed in Cat TV (the sliding glass door looking out onto the birdfeeder or the OTHER one looking out onto a deck which attracts a lot of squirrels).
These are but a few reasons why Kitties Rule.
