Things to be grateful for

My mom talked to my aunt the other day, and she told me that my cousin, S, who had brain cancer as a teenager, had to drop out of college - after struggling to finish for eight years - because she just can't handle the academic work anymore. Either the cancer (which she's free of now) or the radiation treatment for it, permanently bollixed up the workings of her brain.

Which leads me to - okay, I had cancer (and I'm three years out and no sign of recurrence - can we get a HOORAY?) but all things considered, I got a cancer that isn't so bad as cancers go. It could be treated. It didn't affect my brain except right when I was going through chemo (when I locked my keys in the car at the smog check station. Go me.) - I even took master's degree classes throughout the whole ordeal. I don't think with my breasts - at least not last time I checked. I could have lost both breasts and still gotten my Master's. Poor S *lost her cognitive abilities* - and might have to go on Social Security Disability.

The moral? No matter how bad you have it, there's always someone worse off, so chin up and buck up.

Meanwhile, to continue yesterday's theme, the squirrels on my deck are rotund globular things with plume-like tails.

cancer stuff, life
