This is mostly for Tom, since I know he really wanted to be at Pitchfork this year. And I obviously can't make as much sense as other people who actually listen to these bands, but deal with it.

I saw full sets of: Fleet Foxes, Vampire Weekend, The Hold Steady, and Animal Collective.

I saw bits and pieces of: Jay Reatard, A Hawk and a Hacksaw, Dizzy Rascal, Caribou, !!!, and Jarvis Cocker.

Animal Collective melted my face off with their performance. One of the best stage performances I've ever seen. Ever. Lights, perfect rise and fall of the music, they went on right as the sun was setting and played mostly in the dark other than the lights on their stage and a few security lights around the park. The park was literally full all the way to the back for their set. My friends who have gone in previous years said it was the most people they'd seen at Pitchfork.

The Hold Steady were fun, and their fans really got into it. I wasn't very impressed but I'm also not into that kind of music much less seeing it live if I'm not already familiar with it. I will say, though, they had one of the best encores I've ever seen.

Vampire Weekend was rollicking, clean, fun pop. I really liked them. Their sound was crisp and despite the issues with the kick drum mic that seemed to plague the A stage for most of the day, they had a great set.

Fleet Foxes was a great band to start the day with, especially since I had no clue what they sounded like. They have amazing harmony, soaring melodies and sound like great southern folk rock. I loved them.

Jay Reatard was loud and crazy and amusing; a Hawk and A Hacksaw was interesting with a lot of unusual arrangement; Dizzy Rascal was pretty good (British hip hop, you guys might like him); Caribou was...I think they were good but I don't really remember; !!! was craziness (and apparently you pronounce that "chick chick chick"); Jarvis Cocker was meh, but I didn't really pay much attention to him since everyone was getting hyped for Animal Collective.

Tomorrow is round two. Note to self: don't wear jeans, don't wear flip flops, don't bother with a rain jacket or umbrella because you won't use it, and don't bring messenger bag because it matches all the other timbuk2s and it makes me feel like a tool and it makes my back sore and gets in the way.
