This week's course work was very similar to a collection of wikipedia articles about scholarly publications, research, and plagiarism. While much of it was review, the one topic that was new to me was the concept of a research log, to help keep track of what I read an where.
This is an idea I've needed for some time now as I generally read for knowledge as oppose to pure enjoyment, though I do enjoy reading technical papers. Often read about something interesting and incorporate it in my mental picture about how the world works. When I need to express that information to someone else I want to hand them the source material only to find that I cant remember how to find the information.
For example, last weekend I had two separate discussions about social networks, a topic of personal interest since before Social Network Analysis became a buzzword. The points I made came from information I had read from two separate articles, one online and the other from business journal. Had I kept a research journal, I could find and share the source material more quickly. I'm hoping to find something like del.icio.us but for citations.
