Well, I decided to make a wild surge table.
I know, just what everyone needed, right? Well, if you're interested in a Pathfinder-compatible wild surge table, you're welcome to take a look. I needed it for something coming up in my current 2nd Ed D&D game. (Shh! Hopefully the players will miss that comment...) I decided to make it Pathfinder/3rd Ed compatible because it offered a lot of simplification of concepts, plus it allows me to use it in our Pathfinder campaign and when I convert the 2nd Ed campaign to Pathfinder.
Background for those who are interested:
- Wild surges happen in a variety of situations, such as a spell cast incorrectly, wild mages accessing their powers ineffectively, in wild magic areas, or a consequence of using a rod of wonder or similar items.
- There are many, many, many, (etc.) wild surge tables out there, already, but most didn't meet my needs for one reason or another.
- 100 options (the published lists) are just too few and 10,000 (as on most of the lists available online) are just too many.
- I've collected a series of ideas from many sources over the years, evolved them, and incorporated many of my own.
- Those who can influence wild magic effects (wild mages and a certain crazy little rogue in our Maerson campaign) get a bonus to their check (1% benefit per caster level), so the effects need to be ordered from worst to best.
- Because when the target of the spell is the caster, this causes issues with the previous point, I need a list that allows me to use it both ways. In other words, I wanted a list that could work for situations both when the caster is targeting someone else and when the caster is the target.
- I wanted to focus on interesting effects that won't generally be delayed. I did make some exceptions (such as being resurrected upon next death), but in some cases that might happen sooner than desired. ;-)
Here's some notes on
what I ended up creating.
- The RAR file contains a PDF ordered when there is a target other than the caster, a PDF ordered when the target is the caster, and the original spreadsheet with the two columns used for sorting.
- There may be opportunities to add more entries by condensing things, but in some cases (like the devil, demon, protean, etc. entries) I specifically wanted different sorting values on those.
- These have been worded using Pathfinder terms/concepts for clarity and simplicity.
- For spell references, I only used spells from the Pathfinder Core Rulebook as those (or similar spells) are available in the majority of versions of D&D in some form, including our 2nd Ed version.
- It isn't perfect, but it's closer to what I need.
If you have time/interest, I'm very interested in feedback:
- Issues with any of these ideas?
- Any suggestions for improvements?
- Any rules issues/gaps?
- Typos or other general mistakes?
Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
