Briar Rose

You know, I never really liked Disney's Sleeping Beauty.  The music wasn't catchy (except the waltz.  I LOVED the waltz.), and there just didn't seem to be as much action as the other movies.

So of course, I unwittingly picked the English class that is spending half of the semester on Sleeping Beauty.  We watched the Disney version, and I liked it just as much as ever.  I did appreciate the artwork more, though.  And we're currently watching the Pepita's ballet, which isn't my cup of tea, but I can appreciate the time and effort the performers put into it.

I picked up the first book we're reading (which I should have had finished reading last week; we've got three books to read, and we're discussing each book in the span of one week) and I enjoyed the first few chapters.  Then I picked it up again last night because I felt anti-social and tired.  I read it until 1 am, then I finished reading it now.

WOW.  That's pretty much my reaction.  The book's called Briar Rose by Jane Yolen.  It basically sets Sleeping Beauty in the Holocaust, and it really hit home--probably because half of the book was narrated by a gay man who ended up kissing the princess awake.  It's a really powerful book, and I really recommend it.

If any of you have read it, what are your thoughts?

school, books
