Just got back from my trip to Michigan--lots of stories, so little time! I'll be posting stories from our trip these next few days.
I think the moment I really shone was when I actually had to rescue Rina in the lake. We went out a ways, and she was the only one who could kinda swim, but not really. There was a sudden drop, and she couldn't touch, so she went under. She had been bobbing up and down the whole way, so we didn't really think much about it. Joel (her boyfriend) noticed that she hadn't been talking, so he scooped her up and tried to get her above the water, but he wasn't strong enough. So he went down underwater to touch the bottom and held Rina completely out of the water. We were all 'Oh, they're just playing. Isn't that cute?' Rina was gasping for air, and coughing, though, but it wasn't anything major. Suddenly, Joel dropped her back into the water so he could come up for air and he yelled "BRENDEN!" and I caught on to what was happening. I grabbed Rina from behind and swam her back to shore, kinda talking to her and making sure she was okay. The others made sure Joel was okay, but he could still swim after that so he was fine. :)
It really surprised me how inept other people are in the water. Joel was probably the strongest swimmer after me, and he couldn't hold Rina up at all--not moving, and not treading. It kinda scared me, so after that, I kept a really good eye on all of my friends. One time when it was really wavey, Drew went out where the waves were so big we couldn't see over them so I went with him. Matt went after a frisbee Joel threw into the water, and he started floundering--but the waves pushed him back to where he could touch before I could get there. (I was on the shore.) I stayed with Rina in the shallower parts when the others weren't in danger, but I think I'm really starting to appreciate what these past 10 years of swimming have done for me.
