You Know You're Sleep Deprived When...
You have entirely too much fun adding international keyboards to your computer settings. Seriously. I was just checking it out cause I was going to bitch about my Icelandic homework and about how there's an extra verb just hanging out in this sentence and I was going to show you what I mean (never mind that I doubt any of you know Modern Icelandic, much less Old Icelandic). Anyway, I was looking into it and saw the million or so languages listed and giggled. I went ahead and added Icelandic and German so I can now write cool letters like ð and æ without having to look them up in the stupid Character Map. I can also do umlauts! Like ü and ö and ä!
It doesn't help that, with this sleep deprivation, I still have to get my reading done and complete this Icelandic assignment. Granted, the grammar is easier for this one (dative plurals have the same endings for all genders! Yay!), but there's weird phonological rules that have to do with the j-augment, bisyllabic stems and assimilation of letters. Someone please remind me why I'm torturing myself like this again?
The sentence that´s killing me is this: Lond eru þat viða þakin snæm svá mánðum skiptir, en er sol riss á himni eru veðr blið á longum sumardogum. I also just realized that there are no á keys (I had to copy it from the Character Map) or the o with the cedilla (think the French ç except with an o). There should be some of those in there. The o isn't even in the Character Map that I could find. Oh, well. It´s not like y´all know the difference.
Anyway, the problem with the sentence. Lond eru þat viða þakin snæm svá mánðum skiptir, en er sol riss á himni eru veðr blið á longum sumardogum. The bolded words are verbs giving me such trouble. The same verb, actually, just one is singular and one is plural. "Lond eru þat viða þakin snæm svá mánðum skiptir" means "There are lands covered with snow for months." Straight forward enough, right? Then that little word "en." It means "but." This is the chapter we get conjunctions (and the rules that go with them) and already they are the bane of my existence in this language. Ignoring that "er" that follows (previous chapters tell me that it means "is" while the blurb says it's a relative adverb and the next chapter says it means "who"), the rest of the sentence reads "the sun rises in the heavens, the weather is mild in the long summer days." A bit awkward, but I've seen worse. The only thing I've thought to do is make the "er" mean "while" (is that a relative adverb?) and say "but while the sun rises in the heavens, the weather is mild in the long summer days." I think I'll go with that.
The only thing I have to worry about now is remembering which keyboard I'm using.
And how I'm going to stay awake for another two and a half hours. Actually, I've got an hour of that covered when I go make breakfast. I have English to Icelandic translations, but that should take ten minutes max as long as people leave me alone. Maybe I'll work on getting all my vocab together so I don't have to keep flipping through a million pages. There's also Lesson V to start, but that involves past participle and I don't know if my brain can handle that right now. *sigh*
