Ades animo et omitte timorem, Scipio, et quae dicam, trade memoriae

Have no fear, Scipio, and what I am about to tell you, commit to memory.

Africanus appears to Scipio in a dream. Having withdrawn to heaven, they look down upon the world and the majesty of the Spheres, and the elder Africanus gives his mighty grandson advice. Unsurprisingly they talk about Carthage.

Videsne illam urbem, quae parere populo Romano coacta per me renovat pristina bella nec potest quiescere? quam tu oppugnandam nunc venis paene miles.

Do you see that city, which I made to submit to Rome, which renews its ancient wars and cannot live in peace? Now you are about to attack this city as but a common soldier.

It is an unpleasant coincidence that the corporations whose committees of unsecured creditors we represent (whose holdings are worth billions of dollars) will emerge from chapter 11 restructuring at almost exactly the same time. By April our three largest matters will be closed. I will have no billable time whatsoever. Unless all three of these matters are replaced by the spring, my tenure at my current job will be shorter than expected.

This is fine and well, as I had planned to leaving no later than June or July. But the difference between April and July is five figures of $$$. Definitely bearable, definitely irritating.

I've been very, very conservative with my money for the past eight months or so, so I shouldn't have too much difficulty weathering this, especially since I plan either to start school in September or, if I am lucky, move to Washington before the end of the year for a position at the State Department. But I wanted to take two months off, not four. I was hoping for more time to prepare for one or two very large expenses that I know are on the horizon.

But within two years you shall become consul, and then your surname which you have inherited from me will belong to you by right, for then you shall lay waste to Carthage utterly. After you have destroyed Carthage, celebrated your Triumph, have served as Censor, have traveled to Egypt, Syria, Asia Minor, and Greece, you will once again become consul. You will wage a great war and you will annihilate Numantia.

Though there are always things to keep me busy, I think I would like to get some sort of job. Temping is out of the question, because it's awful work and because the temp market is flooded due to New York City's shocking rate of unemployment. If I am going to work for only three or four months, and since money really is no object, I am thinking that it might be pretty cool to get a job at a Barnes & Noble. I'm a pretty hard worker, fairly literate, and wouldn't be a dick to customers, really. I think I'd be able to handle twenty hours a week or so. And the discounts would be welcome, let me tell you.

Anyone have any retail experience in bookselling? Or perhaps other ideas for a relatively simple job that I could take for a few months?

Hic tu, Africane, ostendas oportebit patriae lumen animi, ingenii consiliique tui...

Sed quo sis, Africane, alacrior ad tutandam rem publicam, sic habeto: omnibus, qui patriam conservaverint, adiuverint, auxerint, certum esse in caelo definitum locum, ubi beati aevo sempiterno fruantur.

Here it will be your duty, Africanus, to devote to your people the benificence of your integrity, talent, and wisdom...

But mark this, for this thought will fire your determination to defend your homeland. To each who have served his homeland a special place will be rewarded in heaven, where he will enjoy an eternal life of happiness.

My foreign service oral assessment is on Feb. 20th. I figure I'll be in DC for most of the weekend. Wish me luck.
