It appears that Sydney, my ever-present and dependable laptop, may have bit the dust.
Last week, she started running slow and weird, so I reinstalled Norton AntiVirus. Three days later, she won't turn on. You can turn the laptop on, but it won't boot. And there's nothing connecting to the monitor, so it appears it's a bigger problem than "there's no screen no more."
So tomorrow, I'll call CBE Valcom, the computer company my roommate recommends, and I'll see how much it would cost to get Sydney fixed. Or, if not fixed, all the important data recovered (my gigs of music and TV shows from iTunes, my documents, my fiction, my photos ... all the important stuff).
The worst part of all of this is that I was working on a story, and (because I'm an idiot) I've never backed it up on a different site or on a USB port or even emailing it to myself. And the worst worst part is that last night, before shutting Sydney down, I thought to myself, "Maybe I should email that story to myself ... nah, I'll do it tomorrow."
In the meantime, I'll still attempt to post when funny things happen using Caroline the Netbook. Which might be infrequently, because I hate writing on her. The touchpad is too close to the space bar, and my thumb will accidentally graze it occasionally, and before I know it, I'm either writing in the middle of a paragraph or the entire paragraph has disappeared.
But now, I must do the schedule for work, for I was feeling ill around the time I was supposed to go home this afternoon, and rather than tough it out, I said "fuck it," took the stuff home, took a nap, and will now do it by hand in my jammies.
