a reminder to writers

This may be obvious advice and one that some people follow religiously, but many others (like myself don't). So I remind you...

BACK UP YOUR WORK.

For the past few days I've been thinking: hmm, maybe I should back up my recent stories since I haven't done so in about a year. But nah, I'm too lazy. Plus, what's going to happen to it? My laptop is new, it's IBM, and it's totally hardcore! *tee hee*

Tonight:
Computer: *suddenly blacks out and a message that says something along the lines of "HARDWARE MALFUNCTION. FIND YOUR WARRANTY SLIP BECAUSE YOU ARE SCREWED,  BETCH" pops up on the screen*
Brain: *explodes*

I quickly restarted and before the computer had a chance to die again I transfered my entire My Documents file to my iPod. I literally shut my eyes and prayed to God the entire time it was rebooting/transferring because while my stories aren't exactly completed novels, they're about 150,000 words combined of stories I've thought about, started, and restarted for years. I was stupid not to have backed them up earlier.

So yeah. I'll say it again. If you don't do so yet, back up your work. Regularly. You never know what's going to happen (translation: my laptop is new and it's an IBM!! This doesn't happen to new IBM laptops!! WTF I KEEL SOMEONE *spit* *snarl*)

I made a similar post to this about a year or more ago in Sheroes. It doesn't seem like the lesson stuck then. Maybe it will now.
