Short answer: We might use it, and we've got other things we'd rather be doing ( Read more... )

Well, hell ... if you wait long enough you'll probably be able to replace your whole TV (since I'm assuming you guys probably aren't big screen people) for just a little more than what the converter boxes cost.

You're a lot stronger than I am though. I love my TV and HD has been a whole new aspect of the love affair. LOL! That being said, I'm not a lay around on the couch all the time watching senseless stuff kind of person. I have my specific shows that I watch and I love Food Network.

We record a lot of stuff on the DVR and watch it when we're ready. None of it, however, is American Idol or anything like that ;) You and Laurie may not be TV snobs but Tim and I are huge "programming" snobs ;)

You and some others may find me shallow or stupid because I love my TV (and satellite) but for me it's part of how I decompress and escape. And I read just as much as I watch TV. And when I have things to do, well that's where the DVR is really, really handy, because you're not a slave to the schedule. It's there when you're ready to wind down.

Oh no, we're not strong at all--we're weak and we know it, and that's why we're letting out broadcast go away. :) There are so many other things we enjoy doing more but TV becomes our greatest procrastination time sink. As for our specific shows, most have either gone away, are going away, or are on DVD up to the current season, so we're just planning on watching DVDs when all the other stuff is done for the day.

Well then, maybe I had it backwards and I'm the strong one! NO TV FOR YOU! ;)

I did go for almost a whole week without TV week before last when our satellite had a nice thick coat of ice on it. We were at Mother Nature's mercy. Anyway, I whined a bit but I survived.

In all seriousness though, DVR's are wonderful for the discipline challenged. Because you set it and forget it and it's there when you're ready.

I think we're editing around each other. :) I posted this edited addition in below but you'd edited your comment in the meantime so it slapped me down:

I don't think you're shallow or stupid; we do still decompress with TV (in my case it's usually the PBS-affiliated University of North Carolina stations), we just usually do in other ways (reading for me), and the rest of the time...that's what the DVDs are for. :)

As for DVRs, I've thought about that, but our reception for a lot of stations isn't that great and recordings I've made before are, eh. (The picture may be OK through the antenna but for some reason doesn't translate well to recording.) So I'm back to the pre-bought DVD option, or watching online.
