A few years ago, two friends of mine were dating when the boyfriend told the girlfriend he wanted to date other people. She and I started going out not long after that...which upset the boyfriend, who told her something to the effect of "I didn't think you were going to date other people too!"
The U.S. has become that boyfriend.
I guess everybody knows by this point that Turkey has decided to follow the examples of the U.S. and Israel and launch an offensive into northern Iraq against terrorists who'd been attacking its citizens across the border. The U.S. initially resisted this idea since the Kurds are ostensibly our allies and such an attack might "destabilize" Iraq, though now (according to Defense Secretary Robert Gates) supports Turkey's actions if they keep the strikes limited and make the offensive short-lived. Turkey responded to this by saying
they have no timetable for an Iraq pullout.
To which I say, Go Turkey! The Bush administration has told us countless times that setting a timetable for pulling out of Iraq would only embolden the terrorists and that we must stay there as long as it takes the mission to be accomplished. The PKK has killed possibly thirty thousand Turks, and I support Turkey's right to stay in Iraq until they get the job done. Even, as John McCain would put it, if their soldiers need to stay in Iraq for a million years.
