Cold Weather Snippet

Jul 14, 2009 02:43

Wrote this in about twenty minutes for a Refuge thread in an attempt to combat the heat. It didn't really work. But I will write a fluffy Javid snippet for any reason at all.

Well, he was telling the truth, Jack thought as he saw David shut the door promptly after opening it to find a blanket of snow. David had told him how much he disliked winter. It was dropped in, conversationally, to some anecdote about an ice-skating adventure that Jack was rambling on about before the weather had turned frigid.

But it may have been the understatement of the century. David was swaddled in a parka, gloves, scarf, and thick boots. To top everything off, he was wearing earmuffs. They were matting down his hair in a way that was mildly comical. That is, it would have been comical if Jack weren’t embarrassed to go out with this person, who, had it not been for those blue eyes, would have been completely unrecognizable.

"David, it ain’t that cold. Just take off the gloves and the scarf. And the earmuffs. I’m not goin’ anywhere with you and those earmuffs."

David said something then, but the worlds came out in a muffled clump because the collar of his parka and scarf were covering his mouth. He gave them a tug downwards. Even under the four inches of padding Jack could read his body language: annoyed. "It’s cold. I like to be able to feel my fingers. I’m keeping them," David said, making his way towards the door and opening it again.

Jack was surprised when David didn’t wobble under all his padding. He leaned on the door, shutting it. "Davey, take the boots off."

"No Jack. If I put on my regular shoes, my feet will get wet. And cold. Then I’ll get pneumonia."

"That’s an old wife’s tale," he rolled his eyes, still leaning on the door. He was not letting David out of the house like that.

"You should be wearing a coat too! You’re going to get sick." David pinched the material of Jack’s thin sweatshirt beneath his fingers.

"I got my coat in my car. Tell you what," he said, bending a little to look David straight in the eye, "you take off the earmuffs and change into your regular shoes, I’ll put my coat on."

David weighed his options. Jack having a drippy nose would be worse than being cold for a few minutes. "I’ll take the ear muffs off," he conceded. "I keep the boots."

"Take off the boots. I’ll carry you to and from the car, Princess."

David did not have time to glare at Jack properly because the latter had already slipped out of the house and to his car. Not one to let Jack get the best of him, he wrestled his boots off while Jack sprinted to the car. When he looked up after finally getting his sneakers on, there was Jack, standing in his doorframe. Wearing a leather jacket.

David took the scarf off too. He was starting to feel a bit hot in his coat anyway.
