character name: Komui Lee
Fandom: D.Gray-Man
Timeline: After the move of Headquarters; After Chapter 164
character's age: About 29
canon powers, skills, pets and equipment: Komui isn't gifted with Innocence and he doesn't have any other amazing power, but Komui has proven time and again he doesn't need power.
The most obvious thing about him is his intelligence. While he's a very goofy character, he's very smart. Perhaps it doesn't show through like it might with those more serious, but Komui's never let it get in the way. He's an inventor, creating robots, tending to the Anti-Akuma weapons (he is only one of two capable of repairing them) and creating useful things for the Exorcists that he hopes will help them have a better chance of survival on the field.
It's often noted by characters how a lot of his experiments are weird or dangerous, but there are those times when they actually hit and are useful. He makes tonics and potions that can do anything from turning you into a kid, making bunny ears grow in place of hair or turn your entire staff into violent zombies.
Komui can sew! His cooking skills need work, but he can sew very well and the designs for the uniforms? Komui's really good at those too. He likes to think he has good taste, hence the white beret, glasses he doesn't really need and the white clothes.
Of course, with all the dangers that those under his command put themselves in, Komui's got medical knowledge. It goes hand in hand with his ability to repair Anti-Akuma weapons.
non-canon powers: None
canon history: Komui was the first born son to a chinese couple and born approximately thirteen years before his younger sister, Lenalee.
The Lee family was a traditional family, two parents, two kids, living together. At some point, while Lenalee was still incredibly young, akuma killed the Lee parents, leaving Komui to play the role of mother, of father and of older brother for Lenalee.
He'd do what he could for her, taking care of her, cooking (though he stunk at it), and doing the job of three people to the best of his ability. However, it was not meant to last. Despite the lovely home that Komui was giving to his sister, she was to be taken from him anyway. It turned out the only weapon capable of destroying the creatures that killed their parents, Innocence, had found in Lenalee a possible compatability. She was taken away to be prepared as an Exorcist, all to save mankind.
Komui understood her fate, understood that it was necessary, but he couldn't allow her to do it alone. She was all he had and he, all she had. He refused to allow her to go it alone and too made his way into the Order. Komui strived until succeeding, becoming the Supervisor of the Black Order Headquarters, all so he could be beside Lenalee and make her struggles perhaps just a little bit more bearable. It was shortly after he came to Lenalee's side that he cut his long hair, a sign of the change in him.
When he was first introduced, his personality, or rather, his untidiness, was the first thing to come out. Allen Walker, who was sent to the Order's HQ by a general, arrived to join the Black Order and said a letter had been sent to 'a guy named Komui', telling about his arrival. Komui hadn't paid much attention to his mail and, because of that, Allen ended up being attacked by a fellow Exorcist while Komui spent quite some time trying to dig through the piles of papers, mail and books until it was found.
Komui tended to the injured, fixed Anti-Akuma weapons, handed out job assignments and, quite often, caused trouble around the Headquarters in the form of Komurin, a robot series that he built, several times before, that generally malfunctioned and caused quite the mayhem. Komurin tended to start out quite well, a useful tool to have around, but every time Komurin was functioning, something, usually coffee or faulty programming (or both), sent it rampant. Komurin's implement of destruction was always Lenalee (save for the first one, destroyed by Kanda for eating his soba).
When the Black Order Headquarters was invaded, Komui took his role as Supervisor very seriously. To him, his home had been invaded and it was absolutely necessary to do everything within his limited amount of power to protect those under his command. He locked Lenalee and Lavi, along with the civilians, in Arystar Krory's room to prevent them from being hurt, knowing them well enough that, even without their weapons, they would try and fight anyway.
He handed out the orders that started the evacuation of Headquarters at the behest of Hevlaska and was in the process of meeting with her when Rouvelier took Lenalee. Despite the confusion, the feelings within, he went to her (after some 'convincing' from Kanda and Lavi) and was among the three that witnessed the evolution of her Innocence.
The breach of Headquarters had left devastation everywhere. Because of this, it was decided that they would move to a new location and all those living there were to follow. During this time, an experiment that belonged to Komui, Komuvitan D, a drug that would allow a human to work constantly, with no rest for several days, came up missing after the Science Department confiscated it from Komui. It normally wouldn't have been too much of a problem, since Komui had no idea where it was to begin with, but a specter haunting the halls of the Headquarters had found it.
Unhappy with the move, it had infected Arystar Krory with the 'miracle drug'. Once that person bit someone, it caused all mental functions to shut down. They were basically the living equivalent to a zombie. It spread like a wildfire, infected people biting those trying to get away.
Komui was, with his latest model of Komurin, hiding out. After much chaos and plenty of running around, all that remained unaffected by the virus were Lenalee and Komui. The specter who caused all of it had possessed the Supervisor's little sister and declared the reasoning for its actions.
The Disciple experiments had caused many casualties. Many young men and women were sacrificed for it. For over a hundred years, the blood that stained the Order's name had sat and waited, content with the way things were. When the move began, it grew angry and afraid. If everyone left, there would be no one to remember what happened there, no one to give them an existence.
Komui proved that theory wrong as he listed off several names from the last hundred years, names of those who perished for the sake of the Order and promised that he would never forget those that died for the Order to get where it was. He had assured the specter that it was his duty as the Supervisor to ensure that those memories lived on.
Content with this, the specter surrendered. Unfortunately, it wasn't quick enough and Komui and Lenalee had fallen victim to the virus. It was only after, when the Head of the Asian Branch came back ,did things get turned back to the way they were.
personality: Generally, when one thinks of Supervisor Komui, their mind would probably jump straight to insane. He's quite the goofy character, constantly designing a new terror in his own image to help make things easier, only to fail and create a machine of chaos. He's often cheerful when it comes to the dreary office life, though that is or can be attributed to the fact he is almost never seen without a cup of coffee in hand. Not just any coffee though! He only drinks Blue Mountain coffee, and only in his bunny mug.
Komui only makes this insanity worse when his sadistic side surfaces. As a scientist, it's one of Komui's jobs to experiment with new things and create new ways to help tend to the needs of the Exorcist. When there's a certain look in his eye, you can be certain that most look (or most assuredly run) the other way and avoid him. This is usually seen when he's taking care of broken Innocence or when it comes to Lenalee, thinking up horridly painful ways to commit the next act. Patients under his care usually scream in fright at his eccentric ways and the images of vengeance that dance in his head would scare even the akuma.
The Supervisor's devotion to his sister is clearly evident. He's constantly worried about the 'purity' of his sister and does everything in his power to make certain there is no man around her unless absolutely necessary. He goes overboard with this sister complex, sometimes, but it's all to show he really does love her and he's a bit scared of losing her as well. The only way to wake him up from his naps (only effective way, really), is to utter the words 'Lenalee is getting married' to jolt him to attention.
Despite all the insanity that comes with knowing Komui Lee, he is truly a kind, understanding and intelligent person. He's perceptive, strategic and though he may not have Innocence to fight with, he will not back down. He does all that is within his power to protect both the Finders and the Exorcists he sends out, often taking responsibility for those that died as their Supervisor. Much weighs on Komui, though he doesn't often show it. He has plenty of sage advice to give, putting aside the maturity issue that usually arises when Komui's concerned.
He is a decisive person and dislikes going back. When he says something, he sees it through to the end, no matter what the outcome may be. He can sometimes be ruthless when thinking about the well-being of those around him, what is best, what may turn out to be the only course of action and doesn't allow people to question him on it. It is a side he doesn't show often.
Just because he works for the Order does not make him a slave to it. He often shirks his duties, using excuses like being on the phone or dashing off while people are not paying attention to avoid it. Sometimes there are rather large distractions to help with that. Then there are the times when he defies authority, disobeys orders for what he thinks is best. He and Rouvelier seem to butt heads quite often because of it, though Lenalee could very well be at the heart of all their 'tension'.
Perhaps the most normal thing about the mad scientist is that his office almost always reflects his wild personality. He wears white and sometimes seems to be ahead of the important things, but in truth, he's an untidy man with a habit of losing things. When it comes to finding them or cleaning up, just like with his work, he delegates it to someone else while he busies himself with something else.
