So Happy Merdeka, everyone! No, I didn't get tagged or anything but hey, I thought, let's make it a tradition of some kind. So here I am again, albeit this year there's a translated version for everyone else. Apparently the meme is for your MOTHER tongue, but uh...yeah. Banana. So. ;P
On that note: I went to apply for my driving license and to take the first exams the other day (FINALLY), but I realised something rather important - my spoken Malay has gone the way of Windam in an acid storm. Or rather, I got so tongue-tied it must have appeared that way as well. "You can understand Malay, right?" the receptionist was asking with no small measure of worry. "YA, yaaaa," I assured her. "Cuma dak tak lama cakap, jadi, rusty sikit." It's as lame as it sounds, but that's another thing. Colloquial youth!Malay looks really, really BAD in writing. You know, the kind you see in the local comic magazines with the mix of dialects, handy abbreviations and general rojakness. I hang with the entirely wrong crowd to catch this, but one can scarcely believe people actually talk like that. You don't see ebonics in a hip-hop mag, do you? Hapo bendo ni le, brader? ^^; Forget looking at the AF chats and such. On the other hand, you tend to grab some Proper Malay Novels and wonder, "Every prefix and suffix is voiced, not a single abbreviation in sight...well, never mind the old parent-dies-and-problem-child-reforms storyline, who speaks like this?!" It comes out stilted like much of my Malay blogging efforts.
Malay is very frequently not spoken as she is written, nor written as she is spoken. Sigh.
I spent much of the day completing my little Merdeka project!
Go see it up on DeviantArt--you have to click 'download' to view it, though, but it's short and (I certainly think!) worth it. The whole thing underwent a lot of changes, but it got done and I got to doodle lots along the way XD Somewhat unfortunately, while thinking over the logistics I suddenly realised that I was in the right position to grab a really good username or alias to use professionally.
Really good.
Really apropos.
Really fitting, both personality- and profession-wise.
Unfortunately some people already got the same idea, and are either a) squatting the site at DA *brick brick brick* or b) have taken it on the more major blogsites. Have resigned one's self to adding a dash to the combination. At least now I have an extra concept to hold to--not to mention a slightly new style of self portraiture. XD Wee!
Hmm. Apparently since Yamada Chieco moved blog, she hasn't put down a single English entry! *sadface* Pity, as that was what drew me there in the first place: the feature on Eigo de Shaberanight (Can You Speak English?). I nearly fell off the chair when I realised that John Jesu Jingleheimer CHRIST, she's not much older than I am. @__@ Howarrrgh! What am I doing here?!
...Hey, Semagic, do something about your draft-saving ability, will you? I've been trying to translate these two bloody entries for an hour now, and your losing my edits does! Not! HELP!
P.S. - Tomorrow should be the DA Up-fest, so don't say I didn't warn you! ;)
