this is in the Huachuca Mountains, just southwest of Sierra Vista. we were about 1.5 miles from the international border.
we encountered this sign at the start of the trailhead
while on the trail, border patrol showed up at the trailhead parking lot. they had sped off while we descended. the town was swarming with patrol SUV's. it's alarming to me how much power they have. a border patrol agent is allowed to stop anybody within 100 miles of an international border. additionally, they have much more discretion than a police officer does when decided to search a person or a vehicle. the U.S. Supreme Court set the precedent for border patrol to have this power in the 70's. critics call the 100 mile boundary of enforcement a "constitution free zone."
