Marshall Brain has written a very insightful
article about how automation of the work now performed by humans will affect the distribution of wealth. This is a subject I've given some thought to, but he articulates some key points very well and backs them up with statistics, which is something I never bothered to do.
The gist of it is this: we're already seeing computers and robots eliminating jobs. That process is only going to accelerate in the future. But how will that affect our economy? What will happen to all the people (the majority) who do not have the skills to perform the few jobs that will be left for humans?
I dream of a utopia where most of us work two, maybe three days a week, and spend the rest of our time having sex and making art. This isn't going to happen without a revolutionary change in the way wealth is distributed. Rage Against The Machine touched on this fact with their classic line: "Fuck the G-ride, I want the machines that are makin em." Who's going to own the machines? Who will profit from their labors? And who will be left to starve?
