A shorter bit today...
Chapter 5
Colby was dealing with yet another kidnapping case, he still wasn’t sure how he kept pulling them. Anyway, it was more fun this time, notice the sarcasm, because it was some TV starlet. Dealing with everyone’s publicists and bodyguards, yeah, loads of fun. And David was off on vacation for the week, so he was flying solo. Not to mention he hadn’t slept in 26 hours.
He was just about to head back to file statements when he heard his name called. Turning, he recognized one of his grunts from before CID. The guy hadn’t changed much at all, besides some hair loss and paunch gain.
“Turner, hey.”
“I haven’t seen you in forever, dude. Wanna grab a brew together?”
“Sorry. Got a date this afternoon.”
“Any reason I can’t join in? Give the girl a choice?”
Colby smiled, knowing that if he did let him tag along, there’d be hell to pay, but hey…
“Sure you want flashbacks to twelve-mile treks? We’re going hiking once I catch a few winks.”
“Why not? I’m getting flabby, all this cushy security work.”
“Fine. Meet me at the ___ Park lot at 2.”
Colby was lacing up his old combat boots, sitting on the hood of his car, when Turner showed up. Charlie had headed off for the bathroom.
“Where’s the little lady?”
“Actually, about that…”
“Hey, Colby. Ready?” Charlie asked, walking over while attempting to pull his hair into a ponytail. He was always getting it caught on tree limbs, otherwise.
“Sure, Char. Oh, this is Greg Turner, one of my soldiers when I was still on patrol.”
“Nice to meet you, Greg. So, we ready? It was my turn to pick the trail, so we’re doing ___. I’ve let myself get flabby over the term.”
“Sorry, guys. I’ll just be going. My phone just buzzed.”
After Greg left, Charlie asked, “Did you hear it?”
“No, but it was likely an excuse. He made the assumption that he would be meeting a girl he could try to steal away.”
“Are you OK? This was the first time you encountered people from your Army days that didn’t have an inkling about me.”
Pasting a smile on, Colby answered, “I’ll be fine. Kinda threw me, but I was expecting it at the same time. Let’s get going, so we can make it back before dinner. You brought the lunch, right?”
