I'm 20 years old and I want to dye my hair an unnatural colour now before i progress deeper into my 20's and acquire more responsibilities that would prevent such a self indulgent exercise. I feel like this is my last chance to have blue hair.

I'm thinking about doing a blue streak (TO REPRESENT HOW MUCH I TALK, HAR HAR HAR) for my cousin's wedding in Maui...so I'm kinda on the same page as you right now. I have dyed black hair so I'm well aware of the nightmare in store.

That said, when I was a punker/goth/skater/insert subculture in high school, I used the Manic Panic 40-volume kit on dyed black hair twice and got it light enough to dye Manic Panic Shocking Blue over it. I had to touch it up once a week but my hair survived. I have no idea how. I'm not saying you should push your luck like I did. I guess I'm just thinking, it's too bad it's such an ordeal, and if you find a way to do it, let me know!

What I WILL say is that blue, once it's in your hair, is A MAJOR BITCH to bleach out completely. It will be vaguely green-tinted for a VERY long time. At least that was my experience. Your mileage may vary.

I would speculate that maybe a bleach kit, at least for the first go-round, might be better, because that way it's kinda foolproof. I feel like my hair experiences more fry-age from DIY mixing than from boxed bleach kits.
