My magical person
She was brightly clothed
In an ever-sparkling aura
And I was awe-struck.
The brightly clad community
Of the kindergarten classroom
Welcomed with open arms
And a gleaming white smile
Fun was just around the corner.
All ideas embraced
All opinions taken into account
No matter how little the person
All voices had listening ears.
We were asked for ideas,
To make this community ours
A fun place for everyone
And I leapt to be heard
Because no one had listened before.
My magical person
My teacher and mentor
Saw my enthusiasm
Gave me a chance at responsibility
String painting was my idea
She thought it was wonderful
And at 5 years old
She gave me my very first
Set of students to teach.
Feeling capable, empowered
Was something I thought
Forbidden to children.
She gave it to me.
She taught me I had a gift inside
She taught me I could
Use it to make people happy
She gave me something my parents didn't
The gift of self-respect.
