For those of you interested, here is the full story about my tuition problems. If you've already heard this story, you can just skip this post.
About a year ago I realized that keeping my money out in a Pennsylvania bank while I attended school out in Ohio was inconvienent and annoying. In order to remedy this I decieded to open up a second account at Chase Bank and keep all my tuition money out in Ohio with me. I thought it would make life in general more simple. Oh, how wrong I was.
First thing I did was call up the PA bank (called Royal Bank) and told them I planned to close my account. The woman was understanding and told me to write out one check to myself and deposit it into my new account with Chase. She would then collect the remaining funds from the account and send it out to me as a treasurer's check. That way I would be able to pay for my tuition from the new Chase account. What could be easier?
Turns out by the time Chase would have that money available I would have missed the deadline for tuition. I talked to one of the personal bankers at Chase and he recommended I write two checks, one to Miami and the other to myself. He would take the one I wrote to myself and deposit it into my new account. The rest of the money would go to Miami and I figured once the woman at Royal saw that the amount we agreed upon was withdrawn she would send out a check of about $600 and everything would be taken care of. Oh what I fool I was to think it was that simple.
Here's where things go wrong. For about a week i think things are going my way. I have a new account, my tuition has been paid, and I have cut all ties to Royal bank. I get a message from the package center saying that I have a package waiting for me. I got and find a regular sized envelope (why was it sent to the package center and not my mail box which would have reached me faster??) with a check inside of it. I glance at the check, which was from Royal bank, for an amount about $10,000. I blink at the check. My breath starts to quicken. My heart is fluttering and I start to sweat. Soon my mouth opens and a flood of swear and curse words starts flowing from me like a water through a broken dam in Hurricane Katrina. It was at that point I realized that my tuition check had bounced.
I quick called up the woman from Royal bank. I told her that the check she had sent was for too much. She said that she did what we had agreed upon, when a check cleared on that account she closed it out and sent out the remaining balance. I blink and think that the amount that went through was far less than the amount we agreed upon, but this is not the time for that arguement. I have not paid my college bills, I'm going to get kicked out of classes in a matter of days, meaning I'm going to get kicked out of the dorm, and probably out of Ohio very soon. I apologize and ask her for her advice. She says it will look better for me if I approach the university myself and tell them about the check bouncing. I agree and head over to the CAB building. I arrive and after a few misdirections I end up in the right office, with a very nice bursar officer named Linda. She tells me I have till the 4th to get everything sorted out but tells me that this sort of thing happens every semester. She gives me her card and I head up to Chase to give them my way over gifted treasurer's check. I get up there and ask if a hold is going to be put on my money but the girl at the front counter is not very helpful. Nor can she tell me how to write an e-check, the payment method of choice according to Linda. I have to sit and wait till the manager of the bank, another nice lady called Sheila, has time to take me back to her office and show me what I have to do to get a physical check to Miami or an e-check online. Okay, this is fine.
The weekend happens, I get a dated letter from two weeks previous saying my accounts are on hold.. Whatever, that was two weeks ago.
I go up Tuesday morning to Chase bank to get my cashiers check and somehow manage to forget two forms of ID. No matter, they can still give me a blank check for cheaper and no ID, I just have to fill it out myself. I do this, under the supervision of the bank teller, then go down to the CAB building to hand it in. The woman at the payment center tells me there will be a $30 fine but otherwise I should be fine. I send an email to Linda, thanking her for her help and she tells me I'm in the clear and I won't have to pay the fine till next semester anyway.
I would like to take a moment to thank everyone who listened to me grip and groan about this for the past week. A special thanks goes out to Tiffany who offered to loan me $2,000 to help me meet the tuition cost. She truly is a dear for offering, but I'm glad things worked out this way instead. You are all wonderful for helping me through this awful mess and I thank you. ^_^
