So long HSV

Folks,

Okay, the gig is up.

And my time in Huntsville is at a close.

I started working here on May 22nd and I depart on November 14th.  Just shy of six months.  Originally I was told to expect to be in Huntsville just until August.  Once that date passed, the word was that the job would at least last until the New Year as the contract would be let at that time and they'd need to have folks on hand to ramp up.  Well, the contract was supposed to have been submitted a month ago and now isn't liable to be so until January.  So, looking at its numbers, Boeing decided that it couldn't justify keeping quite so many of us consultants on hand to consult.  And I'm amongst the number being thanked for my services and then sent home.

I found Huntsville to be a surprisingly cosmopolitan a town.  There having been so many rocket scientists - and their families - here for so long has made it so.  I also found Huntsville to be a very sociable place with some very welcoming folk in it.  That greatly eased the isolation I've felt here over the months.

I will miss the friendly folk I have come to meet here.

I will also be glad to get back to San Diego for a bit.  Even if it is just long enough for me to unpack, catch my breath, and then pack up again for my next deployment elsewhere.

It's going to be odd changing my circumstances.  I've become pretty used to living out here even if it has been living from a hotel room out here.  I've also become used to having a residence in which someone else handles its upkeep and have become very used to having brand new cars to drive around in.  Going back home to my house where I am its housekeeping staff and where my wheels are a '96 Ford Ranger with over 150,000 miles on it (and not a current model year rental car) will be an adjustment.

But then, I'll also be sleeping in my bed and not a hotel's.

In any event, I'm glad I've gotten a chance to experience all this and count it as a positive thing.  The people I encountered here, both on the job and off, have been what made it so.
