ABOUT BUNRAKU
Image SourceThe Bunraku theater requires three puppeteers: a Chief Handler (Omo-zukai), a Left Handler (Hidari-zukai) and a Leg Handler (Ashi-zukai). The Chief Handler takes the lead in manipulating the puppet. He wears tall clogs to raise himself high enough to hold the puppet at the proper height above the stage railing. His left arm handles the head of the puppet, while his right arm operates the right arm of the puppet. The Left Handler controls the left arm of the puppet with his right hand. The Leg Handler crouches and grasps rings attached to the heels of the puppet and makes the puppet walk, run, sit, kneel or squat.
Source OPERATING THE DOLLS
Marionette Owl boasts the ability to operate two Bunraku dolls on her own- however, she doesn't do exactly that. When using both puppets in simultaneously, she takes a mixed role of Chief Handler and Left Handler. While the puppets move, their legs don't make a walking motion. Wrist piercings on both her arms connect to wires that hold the puppets aloft; her right arm controls Osan while her left controls Kohal. Additional wires controlled by individual fingers(held via rings on each finger) move their wrists, arms and fingers. Using this method she is able to make them attack and grasp things.
Unlike regular Bunraku, Owl operates her dolls from a distance using barely visible wires. She does this not to keep herself from the battle but to give the dolls more "independence". Owl takes her own place on the battlefield. The puppets tend to scatter when the enemy is close to the puppeteer so that her own defensive maneuvers don't cause them to preform strange movements/run into something etc. Because Owl considers her own puppets movements while she battles, she is a poor fighter while they are in use.
The method used is more similar to Marionette puppetry then Bunraku; hence the name Marionette Owl
THE DOLLS THEMSELVES
"A doll is an approximation of the human form, and a good doll is given a soul." -Marionette Owl
Owl is aware of the fact that her dolls are not physically alive, flesh-and-blood breathing entities. However, she still believes them to be living in their own right. She hears their voices and moves them according to their will. Owl will converse with the dolls freely in private and sees them as her closest family. The dolls themselves have distinct personalities, heavily influenced by Owl's own perceptions on the world. Osan and Kohal are actually male, but dress, act and look like females in order to appear more headstrong.
Osan is the younger brother of Kohal. His personality reflects that of a younger(before Laurence's death) Marionette Owl, as such he is indecisive and not very talkative. Osan is generally immature and brash. He is still able to kill, but generally out of anger rather than mimicking Owl's mercy killings. Osan wears red and is controlled by Owl's right hand.
Kohal is the older brother. He reflects Owl's time as The Spectre Killer, roughly age 14-23. Kohal is more aggressive than Osan and his personality is closer to Owl's. He gets attached to people easily and generally turns to murder as a solution to any and all problems. Kohal also seems to have a crush on Black Arts Viper. Kohal wears white and is controlled by Owl's left hand.
ZYDRATE DOLL ANATOMY
Osan and Kohal are made of a combination of wood, clay and human body parts. Generally human bones are used as a base after they've been soaked in various solvents to bleach them and improve their durability. It's covered with wood and clay, then painted. She is constantly fiddling with their bodies and generally switches their limbs 2-3 times a month.
Occasionally she will use unaltered appendages on her dolls but they rot quickly and are generally difficult to work with.
The puppets stand at roughly 4.5 feet tall. This will change depending on the length of the limbs, but usually Kohal is at least 1-2 inches taller then Osan. The are never taller then 165cm (5'3"), as Marionette Owl is only 175cm (5'9")
