Things! They keep happening.

I have not posted real things in a while. This is because real things keep happening. But here, a post.

Memorial day weekend We spent time with Tyler’s family, sat out on the porch in the rural and walked around in the woods and poked at some goats. It’s nice to check in on your goals periodically - we’re still big fans of houses with porches and yards, the woods, and goats. These are still good things to be working towards. That weekend was lovely and sort of low key, which is good, because I think that was it. I can still see low key in the rearview mirror, but it's getting small.

Last weekend Racheal was in town and it was Dave’s birthday. Racheal! My little rattley package from London. I adore having her around. I mean, I love that she lives in London and is all faux-british and seems happy, but I would have her back, too. There was much running around. Managed to sneak some Ashley/Baby time and a decent Christina and Jason visit in there. There were pictures taken, I will post some.

No pictures of Dave’s party, because I was far too busy catching up with people to document. It was more or less a perfect summer evening. Grilled foods, pretty trees, lots of people I enjoy mingling about. Lots of good hugs, good conversation; felt like I really saw people in a way you don’t always at parties. Caroline and Rob were there, being newly engaged and adorable. Fire, fireworks, fireflies. All of the best of summerthings.

(I am particularly appreciative that the weather gods smiled on us that day, as they've now decided to piss all over my sugar toast. It's so hot I'm actually afraid of outside. I will be walking to work tomorrow in a different shirt than I intend to wear at work, because it is that sweaty at 7:30 in the morning. But I digress.)

Somewhere in there I finally saw a surgeon about my knee, and I’m excited about the prospect of having it fixed, though daunted by how much work that entails.

The surgeon was fabulous. I was apprehensive about the idea of someone knife-happy, but she’s exactly the opposite. Wants to exhaust all the non-surgical options before committing to cut me open. Didn’t sound wildly hopeful about the chances of that succeeding, since it’s been a year and a half since I actually got the injury, but still thinks it’s worth trying.

My new surgery-preventing regime:
- Ice 3x/day
- Wearing a fancy new metal brace for activity out of the house/office
- Anti-inflammatory medication
- Fish oil supplements
- Physical Therapy
- 15 minutes of daily exercises

The new brace has to be custom fitted, and getting an appointment for that is proving to be a whole ordeal; fingers crossed that will happen Friday. Also prayers to anything and everything listening that this thing is well-ventilated; it is not neoprene weather at all.

I’m going ahead and scheduling surgery anyway - it takes a couple months to get an appointment, we’ll know in a couple months if the PT is working, and if it is, well, they don’t mind cancellations.

I'm excited to have a plan. It's work and the damn thing still hurts, and I'm sure the brace is going to be dorky as all get out, but I’m hopeful about the prospect of having a real knee again someday. That's worth lots.

And... It is June now. Not just June: June Eighth. A week into June. Main camp is open.

[Redacted: Aster utterly loses her shit about the continuing passage of time]

Not quite four weeks until we fly West
Not quite five weeks until the Country Fair
Not quite six weeks until the memorial for Mom

There is planning to be done.

This ride, it does not stop. Not a bad time, though.

summer, mom, west coast, stupid meatship, travel, asterlife, ocf, health
