I managed to refrain from making my usual endorphin-fueled 'Oh my god, guys, I love scrimmaging!' post last night.
Guys. Guys. I love scrimmaging. I love roller derby. It's kind of a horrible, violent sport, and you know what? I'm going to be good at it.
They did Green Star assessments last night (the test for eligibility to be drafted to a playing team). I didn't have the attendance to be assessed (see burglary, engagement, work schedule, etc.) but I participated in all the drills and the fresh meat assessment scrimmage, anyway. I really wish it had counted; I'm confident I would have a Green Star now.
Scrimmaging is just great. It's what makes the other practices worth it. In the assessment scrimmage I jammed for the first time, and I see why people love that. I am not built for speed*, but I see why it would be worth working for. I scored my team some points; that's a pretty cool feeling. Then I turned around and scrimmaged with the Night Terrors in a messy game against Regime. (I spent some time icing my face, and it seems not to have swelled. Yay ice.**) They were short players so I was in almost every jam, and, I'm not useless! My endurance needs work, but I don't get useless at the end of the game. I will spare you the play by play, but I hit some people down, I held some people back, I made some good plays. I sometimes knew what I was doing, even.
So, I get my attendance back up and I have nothing to worry about for next month. That's kind of nice. Now I focus on playing better, being an asset to whatever team I do make.***
If you don't have plans July 18th, maybe save the date? Fingers crossed, barring disaster (which is not even close to a sure bet in Derby) that'll be my first bout.
* I am built for violence. It works for me. I'll take it.
** Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation should not be hard enough to remember that one should need a mnemonic, yet RICE sticks in my head.
*** Surprisingly, I have no team preference so far. I haven't played with Speed Regime, but I've enjoyed the other three teams. These women are all kind of amazing; put me with any quarter of them and I'll be glad to wear their colors and wave their flag.
