Taking Stock: My Writing Anniversary

Nov 09, 2009 18:56

I posted my first chapter of my first fanfic, "Hentai Bets," at MediaMiner on November 9, 2006.  I thought this would be a good time to take stock of where I am now.

"Not fair for you to be disappointed - because if you are then what does that make me?"

Obviously, it makes you wonderful for poking me. ^_^

My disappointment is really all centered in how much my productivity has fallen off. If my total word count is 580,000 and I've only written 68,000 in the last year, then that's a huge drop from approximately 250,000 each of the previous two years. I don't mean to sound ungrateful about how well my pieces have been received. I really am tremendously happy (more like amazed!) with the faves and C2s. I know I found a really sweet niche with my favorite pairing. ^_^

Congrats to you on your own posting numbers! You have had a LOT going on with your health and your family and working and everything the whole time I've known you, so I think you have miraculously productive. And when it comes to faves and C2s, you're competing for attention in a much larger fandom then my particular crossover pairing one. You know you have a big hit with SP! Tell you what, I promise to buck up if you don't let me and my grousing get you down. ^_^

Haha, you're so cute. And honestly I think it's kinda natural to wind down a bit. Typically, from those I've spoken to, an author starts writing because inspiration has built up to a breaking point and they simply MUST write a particular idea out. However once that initial blowout happens then not only does real life interfere, but they're either crowded with too many plot bunnies and being pulled in too many directions, or they've had their spurt of productiveness and they start the cycle again of inspiration, then writing.

I wouldn't worry about it too much because it's not like you can force it (...well, you can, but I wouldn't hold very high expectations of my own results under such circumstances...)
