UALR School Shooting

Feb 28, 2008 12:07

There was a shooting at my school yesterday. I am thankfully not hurt as at that time this occurred I was at work at Starbucks. This did happen fairly close to the building that I am normally in though. Only one person was injured that I am aware of. The issues that I have about this whole thing are as follows. Upon returning to class today, there has been no increase in security at all. Half of the student body was not even informed of what happened the previous day. There is an alert system in place that proved to be completely inadequate as those of us who had this system in place never got the alert. While I understand that violence is something we all have to live with on an ever growing basis, our schools and universities should take more action. What about cameras and monitors. Where is the heightened security, I am not talking about a police state just something to show that our safety is a concern to the University. It is my opinion that one cannot truly focus on academia when they have having to worry over the most basic concern of personal safety. In times such as these we all struggle to make sense out of senseless tragedies. The school will be holding a meeting today to discuss what happened. It is my hope that they will listen to the student body and to begin taking appropriate action to secure our safety.
