I fell asleep w/ headphones on and awoke to an Alex Jones commercial. Lost track of all time. Couldn't remember if I had let dog out for last time of night. Or if I ever gave him his sleepy fish water. But, that little dip did help a little. Now I cannot get back to sleep. So, I did a bad thing and took a second melatonin. Now the plan is to do something until the sleepiness kicks in. So, I might as well get a Madness post out of the way!
Note that this post, theoretically, and a few others to follow, is/are leading up to some other future post.
Madness was one of the many two-tone ska groups popular England in the early 1980's, (but maybe also late 1970's). That included Selector, Specials, the Beat, Bad Manners, arguably the Clash, and many others. The members of Madness really looked like they enjoyed each other's company, and were in it all for fun. Like XTC, they had many really strong pop licks and melodies that could hardly be matched. Plus, they had a big kick, and they had their own brand of MADNESS. Just go ape with us, was their message.
Enjoy yourself. It's later than you think. All fun and games with them. They did seem to do more than a few songs dealing with family life and adolescence. So, in that way, they may have hearkened back to the immaturity often associated with Mad Magazine. Or Monty Python. But, they had a sweetness, too. And - also a bit dorky, like TMBG.
Here is a little compendium of several of their top songs...
