IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

Aug 21, 2022 12:51

So, what to do, what to do?  When nuclear missiles are headed at you?  I said I would come back to this subject, and was reminded to do so by the great melanieallett.

What would I do, if there were only - 15 minutes did I say? - until nukes are expected to either hit you, or miss, but not by too much.  Well, the thing is, there is a possibility that they won't hit you, and you might luck out, being far enough away, and not downwind, that you come through not burnt to a crisp.  What you will have to deal with, then, would be any injuries; radiation, and a disappearance of food and water sources.  There is a likelihood that an EMP would have been created prior to the missiles, which would knock out most electronics and communications.  Even if this were not so, after a blast, a similar blackout would result, directly and indirectly, from the explosions.  And, it is the first year of radiation that will be the worst.  How to prepare for all this?

I have a big box of first aid supplies, which should be in the basement already  I do have assorted radios, some two-way.  And two-way is important, especially if they can reach more than a few miles, provided that they still work, after the blasts.  Emerggency radios are also good, especially if they can be hand-cranked, and all that.  There are countless interesting emergency radios out there.

You can try to preserve the operability of your electronic devices by keeping them contained in something ceramic, at east right before the attack.  Having a larger power pack would be very helpful, so you can recharge you radios, etc.  Cellphones will likely be useless.  A power pack that can last a year unplugged, doing discrete charging, is hard to imagine.  So, some kind of generator would be better or supplemental - solar, e.g.

I also have boxes of canned food.  It can be fun to slowly collect canned goods over time.  The pain is having to rotate them, so that the older ones get used first.  But, after a nuclear war, that won't matter.  And, canned food lasts far longer than the dates stamped on the cans.  I also have bottles filled with water.  Ever time I use V8, or etc., I wash out that bottle, fill it with water, set it in the sun for a few days, and then seal it and put it in the basement.  Every time I move to a new place, I empty these bottles and set them out for recycling.  And start over again.

I have a bag of emergency stuff sitting in the living room, really in case of a tornado.  It contains things I could use today, but are ready to throw downstairs as well.  Like, radios, flashlights, gloves, various other things.  Not sure where my gas mask is.  I am including earplugs and eye protection, from intense light.  Whatever.

Here is the first thing I would do if nukes were on their way: I would take potassium iodide pills, plus strontium, potassium and vitamins E, C, D, etc.  The next thing: Get the bathtub running.  Fill that baby up.  Have something to cover the tub, to slow evapouration.  It will be the main source of water for a year.  If you can also have barrels of water, then even better.  Fill up any buckets as well.

I would seal doors and windows as fast as possible.  I would throw my boxes of canned food into the basement.  Throw food from the kitchen down there.  Include a can-opener, etc.  Throw tools, weapons, blankets and clothes down there.  If I had five extra minutes, I would take my dog outside for one last normal time.  Then< I would throw my power pack and my bag of emergency stuff into the basement - not forgetting any cash, personal papers, etc.  Then I go down there and seal as much windows and doors up with duck tape.  Sadly, the basement does not stay dry durning rain, so there will be radiation coming in at one end.

I would duck and cover under the stairs with my dog, wrapped in blankets and hopefully plastic.  It would be important to have weapons.  Without a gun, there would not be much hope even after surviving the first few days.  For the next year, I would stay inside.  So, if you were to stay inside for a year, you would probably think to have something to manage waste.  Recycling urine would be essential.  Eating a pet is possible. Drywall has calcium.

To survive after a holocaust: Get away from people.  Bring the heirloom seeds which you have STORED to a remote, fertile area, near water.  Build traps.  Make fire.  Make shelter.  If there are predators of any kind, don't ask questions, shoot them and smoke them and store them with the onions.  After a few months, drive your Hummer into town and take a mate.  Trade squirrel meat for old B52 cassette tapes.  Run for governor.  Rule the world.  Put an end to this madness once and for all.

And then come home from a hard days work.  You see your mate reclined on the tiger-pelt-covered sofa, staring at your with his or her seven eyes, and you get to work, repopulating the planet with mutant teletubbies.
