Happy May Day / Labor Day
The Pullman company arose with the Republican party, and was one of the few places where blacks could find somewhat decent employment - as minstrels, and attendants. So, the strike must have involved these guys, while it was also being busted by other paid blacks. (The strike occurred less than a year after the historic Chicago World's Fair, opened to the public on May 1, 1893. The fair ended 2 days after the assassination of the mayor, Carter Harrison Sr. Troubled times! - And note, the year, "1894," may sometimes be confused with, "1984").

The commission's report concluded that George Pullman's paternalistic style of management was part of the cause. Later in 1894, in an effort to conciliate organized labor after the strike, President Cleveland and Congress designated Labor Day as a federal holiday. Legislation for the holiday was pushed through Congress six days after the strike ended. Samuel Gompers, who had sided with the federal government in its effort to end the strike, gave his support for the creation of the holiday. After the strike was ended, the ARU formally dissolved.?"
