Common Sense. Thomas Paine.

I guess it is no surprise that one of the greatest things I have ever read, is also arguably the most important publication of all the past 240 years, or more. Common Sense, by Thomas Paine, was first released on this day, in 1776. It was the spark, and the most important motivator, of the American Revolution. Now, America is a well-meaning, bastardly empire - the most important force on Earth. That ironically makes, "Common Sense," the most important work in modern centuries. I have always been a proud member of Britain - a subject of the Queen - knowing that so many liberal and scientific ideas began there. And I know that This Is now Not America. But I stand behind the British and American soul, and call, of Common Sense, daring us to fight back not so much against this or that country, but against what is rude and cruel in man. Be that whatever. Be that America today. Common Sense speaks to the ages - to the oppressed against empire. And so, it speaks to us now. Common Sense is the sense we hold in common, and should not need reminding of. It is the spirit amongst us which prevails, against the guns and armour, against the deceptive words and lies. Common Sense transcends even religion, because the fairness is there in our guts. In our hearts. In this land. Remember that, as times get bad.

Common Sense is a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine. It was first published anonymously on January 10, 1776, during the American Revolution.

Total History.

You can find lots more online. That includes a free e-book via Project Guttenberg, which is linked in my list of progressive readings, HERE.

Well, you Russians. If you want to know about America... don't listen to the news. Read, "Common Sense."
