The Surging Ranks of America’s Ultrapoor: Shocking [facts] given that the U.S. is considered one of the most developed capitalist countries in the world
- by CBS News | September 2, 2015

By one dismal measure, America is joining the likes of Third World countries.

The number of U.S. residents who are struggling to survive on just $2 a day has more than doubled since 1996, placing 1.5 million households and 3 million children in this desperate economic situation. That’s according to “$2.00 a Day: Living on Almost Nothing in America,” a book from publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt that will be released on Sept. 1.

The measure of poverty isn’t arbitrary - it’s the threshold the World Bank uses to measure global poverty in the developed world. While it may be the norm to see families in developing countries such as Bangladesh and Ethiopia struggle to survive on such meager income, the growing ranks of America’s ultrapoor may be shocking, given that the U.S. is considered one of the most developed capitalist countries in the world.

“Most of us would say we would have trouble understanding how families in the county as rich as ours could live on so little,” said author Kathryn Edin, who spoke on a conference call to discuss the book, which she wrote with Luke Shaefer. Edin is the Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Sociology at Johns Hopkins University. “These families, contrary to what many would expect, are workers, and their slide into poverty is a failure of the labor market and our safety net, as well as their own personal circumstances.”

(Remember when I used to talk, seriously, about how we were headed for becoming a third world country? Now here we have corporate media, CBS news, admitting the inevitable. The funny thing is, I was regarded as crazy then, and I am regarded as crazy now, by certain brainless slugs. Do you know what it is like, going through life, always coming up against these ignorant narcissists, passing moral judgement, just to convince others that they deserve another buck?

I even said that there would be a day when there would be poverty like you see in Africa, or on USA Indian Reservations, but that is yet to unfold. In the mean time, the time is mean. I am the canary in the coal tar).

"There is no hunger in America! Look at the lines at the food pantries! Those people are getting food, so how can they be hungry?!"

Yes, and they are getting sugar foods, and wheat, and GMO, and additives, and pesticides - and fatty, hormonised meat - above and beyond the food of the jet set. They are eating food which is high in calories and low in nutrients. That means they tend to suffer from health problems, after this, and the health problems which many of them had in the first place; and the inability to go to or pay for medical care; and the social neglect and disdain for their existence they experience daily... (The government won't pay for a root canal, and so head-off future heart disease, dementia and even cancer, because the poor are less-than-people, and only deserve to have their teeth pulled. A few years ago, even that was not allowed).

And what of all those poor people who are disabled, old, or mentally ill, who cannot reach, or even know about, food pantries? What about all those millions of poor people, hidden from sight, who cannot get to food pantries? Or are too proud? What about all the people who are dying from other illnesses which follow from their malnutrition and stress? There is hunger now and the hunger is increasing, all because certain assholes wanted to raise the Dow, raise the dollar, send jobs overseas, and fill the world with oil. And war. Disgusting, lowly primate trash.

How convenient, for the self-aggrandising rhetoricticians, to look to what is in plain sight - lines at the food pantries, banks and soup kitchens - as an "example" of how the very problem which does exist, "does NOT exist" - revealing themselves to be the immoral parasites that they are.

Then they go on to jealously, rapaciously ape, and dispose of, those who are truly moral.
