People who don't compete for success, efficiency or to benefit others, compete for the sake of ego. Studying criminology or deviant behavior, one quickly comes to realize that most of the damage done in this world is not done by criminals but by ordinary people in the pursuit of their ordinary lives. By simply doing as we are told we can surpass the accomplishments of the psychotics and sociopaths with barely a murmur of disapproval. This was noted sixty years ago by Thomas Merton who, i am sure, was not the first to take note of it.
