Hey, I've been up for twenty-four hours! Uh....yay?
So the Day of Longness was, as advertised, long. Rachel and I had dinner at Bucca di Beppo, which of course left us with copious leftovers which we stashed in the car. We went in to the concert. Band of Horses were awesome and sounded GREAT live, and then Pearl Jam was pretty frickin awesome too. They did not play Jeremy, Betterman or Nothingman which was disappointing. They did play quite a few older songs, including to my surprise, "Corduroy," which is one of my favorite tracks off "Vitalogy" but I didn't think it was one of their bigger hits. I'm not familiar with their new stuff so a lot of the songs weren't known to me, but I liked them and it made me want to go buy the new album, so I guess mission accomplished, Pearl Jam. And Eddie Vedder has lost nothing in the vocals department.
There was a really drunk girl behind us who managed to dump beer all over our backs. Then while staggering down the steps, she fell and kicked Rachel right between the shoulder blades. About half hour before the end of the show I had this sudden image, almost like a premonition, of her puking all down my back. This was starting to seem like a nonzero probability. Happily it did not happen but I was briefly paralyzed with the thought of what I'd do, apart from freaking the hell out.
We got out around 11. On to Phase Two = Iron Man!
The theater where we were seeing it is literally across the street from the arena where the concert was. At this theater, you can buy advance tickets with reserved seating, so none of that waiting in line to get a decent seat crap. You can show up at 11:59 and get your awesome seat. Also the reserved seats are in the balcony and are leather comfy chairs. It rules the mostest. We needn't have worried, the turnout wasn't huge (the bigger crowds for the midnight showings are at the theater near campus, this one is downtown). We sat in Rachel's car for a few minutes between concert and movie and noshed on leftover pasta. Another awesome thing about this particular theater is that they do NOT show commercials or TV promos or what have you. They don't even have one of those cheesy "Isn't our theater chain awesome?" bumpers. Just previews. We got like four previews and then whammo, right into Iron Man 2 by about ten after midnight. Sweeeeeet. At other theaters you're lucky to get the movie started by 12:30. What previews did we get...lemme think. A-Team. Next summer's mysterious Spielberg/JJ Abrams movie. Eclipse. Aaaaaand...Inception, that's right.
The movie? Was superfun. Not as much ebullience as the first one, which did admittedly have the advantage of being surprisingly good. Now there's no surprise and we have expectations. The first one also had the advantage of containing the really strong thread of Tony becoming Iron Man, from the caves to the at-home experimentation to the exhilaration of the first time he takes the suits out and so forth. Which always leaves you with that thorny "what happens next" conundrum. RDJ was, goes without saying, his awesome self and superhot, stuff got blowed up real good and Sam Rockwell stole the show like he always does, ScarJo was sexy and kickass, there was a pretty good Captain America joke. And yes, there's a post-credits scene.
Oh, and that briefcase suit scene? Is just as awesome as you think it is. (In case you've missed it in the previews, there's a scene where Tony pulls out this briefcase, puts it on the ground, sticks his hands in it, lifts it up and it turns into an Iron Man suit around him). You can see the full clip
here. I've watched it like ten times now.
We got out around 2:30. And I decided to just come back to work. I don't know about you, but for me, to go home, take my makeup off, get in bed and sleep for a couple of measly hours, try and get up and have a normal day...I'd feel worse than if I just stayed up and worked. I had a low-ebb moment around 5 to 5:30 but I just went out to Bob Evans and had some eggs and coffee and I'm feeling fine. Plus I can leave in...like three hours. Go home and take a nap before my evening plans kick in.
The waitress at Bob Evans told me how nice I looked this morning. I had to smile, cause this makeup's a full day old and I've already switched from contacts back to my glasses. :-)
