This post is going to be a random collection of thoughts and reports and observations so bullet points it is.
- Rachel looooooved "Sherlock Holmes." I knew she would! We had the theater all to ourselves, which is always fun because you can talk as loud as you like. She agreed that the slash just writes itself.
- This week I am writing a movie preview about "Robin Hood." Could there BE less excitement for this movie? I kept forgetting that it existed. I saw a preview for it before Avatar, I think, and for a second I was seriously like, are they re-releasing Gladiator? It looks like the same movie. Same director, same actor, Russell even has the same haircut. I'm just wondering why we have this movie. Was the world really aching for yet another version of Robin Hood? No one seems to care, like, at all. I mean, it could be a huge ginormous hit but I'll be surprised.
- That guy I was supposed to go out with this week totally bowed out. We were to the "deciding on day and time" stage when today I get an email from him saying he's got someone else he'd rather invest his time in getting to know. But I'm so attractive and wonderful and have such a great smile and he's sure I'll have no trouble meeting other guys and blah blah blah like whatever, man. It's not like I was pinning my hopes and dreams on this guy but you know?
- I have a question about "Glee." I know lots of you watch it and love it. I neither watch it nor love it. But I have a question. It seems like every time I turn around, there's a post on ONTD about how some big star, usually one with some musical/theater chops, is going to be on Glee. Idina Menzel! Kristen Chenoweth! Julia Roberts! Neil Patrick Harris! Madonna! J. Lo! RuPaul! Okay, that last one I made up, but the rest I didn't. Isn't this a bad sign? Isn't excessive stunt casting usually a sign of The End of All Things? I mean, the point of a show shouldn't be as a showcase for whatever Big Star who's a fan called up the producers and asked to be on, because how could they say no? It got kind of ridiculous on Will & Grace, but not for like six seasons.
- I only made it about fifteen minutes into watching this week's new episode of "Castle" until I had to turn it off because I was so annoyed. Yet another episode about BDSM written by someone who doesn't know the first thing about it and is all "Ooooh, how ooooogy, S&M" and keeps putting forth the damaging stereotype that people who enjoy BDSM are somehow psychologically damaged or criminal or mentally ill. Argh. Please note that I myself am not into BDSM but I've been listening to Savage Love for long enough to know better.
- Corey Haim died. That's a shame, but it is heartless to point out that it's not all that surprising?
- I'm ridiculously excited that after work today I'm going to the consignment store, next door to which is the tea salon where I will get a big mug of the best hot tea in the world.
- So I sometimes buy Starbucks gift cards on eBay. With how much Starbucks I drink, if I can get a $50 gift card for $42, I'll do it. I've done this a couple of times without incident. My most recent one was a $100 card which I got for $92. I waited and waited and it didn't come. I emailed the seller and asked what's up. He replied that he'd just gotten the item back in the mail for insufficient postage, and would I like it resent or a refund? Umm...insufficient postage? On a gift card? One stamp ought to have done it! Two, max. I smell a rat. So I asked for a refund. No activity on that front yet. We'll just see.
So I'm sure many of you have seen it, but there are pictures up online now of Alexander McQueen's final collection, which was shown at an understated non-runway show recently. Project Rungay has a nice selection of photos up. I actually got teary looking at these, because they're so beautiful in a way that no real person could ever wear them, which is why I think the models are styled to be so...not people. They're the epitome of the idea that fashion can be art that you wear, because these are art. McQueen was clearly inspired by Bosch (I'm told some of the clothes have actual Bosch paintings woven in or silkscreened in) and medieval tapestries, the whole thing is so Renaissance and some of these pieces are just breathtaking, and some of them surprisingly wearable. It's just more evidence of what a talent was lost.
