An act of sheer will

I must be channeling Rachel, because I am freezing here at work today. I guess it's my own fault for wearing a t-shirt, but it's not supposed to be cold this week.

I woke up with a quote in my head the other day. "Creation is an act of sheer will." I thought it very apt with my ongoing difficulties in completing my rewrite of "Third." I went to the computer to Google the quote, hoping it was someone profound like Kierkegaard or Hemingway.

Turns out it's that guy from "Jurassic Park." Oh well. The sentiment is sound.

My inability to continue with my rewrite has been 50% frustration, 25% sheer terror at the volume of work ahead and 25% fear at the entire book changing yet again. But none of those things are valid excuses. Writing a book is an act of creation, and a powerful one at that. I've experienced firsthand the feeling of power that comes when you've willed into being a universe of characters and events which others care about as if they were real people. The "sheer will" part is where I'm coming up short.

So I'll just have to make a commitment. Starting today, I will commit to writing at least one page of the rewrite every day. One page doesn't sound like much, but often (in my experience), a single page is all that's required to get you past that stumbling block and into the groove again. And hey, it's more than I'm writing now on it, so I'll take it.
