Creativity, mine and other people's

I wrote ten pages last night. I finished and posted Chapter 8 of Two Crows Joy.

*cue choirs of angels and flourish of trumpets*

Thank God. I wrote something.

More TNG-watching for last night's stitching session. I've started DVRing the G4 airings just so I have stuff to watch while I stitch (I'm taping the TNT "Without a Trace" reruns for the same reason). I used to use my Trek videotapes for this, especially when I was at Bryn Mawr and had no cable. When I was at my parents' house, I used to watch "North and South" in its entirety (books 1 AND 2, thank you very much, that's almost twenty hours of Swayze goodness) for stitching purposes. Hmm...I do have that on DVD. Anyway, TNG is much with the good, but the ads on G4 are even worse than on Spike. Endless car, beer, and videogame ads aimed at the men who naturally are the only ones watching Star Trek, right? *sigh* Because girls NEVER like sci-fi. Girls like fingernail polish and shows about babies and weddings and shit like that, right?

Sorry. Having a bitter feminist moment.

The difference, I've realized, between the Fill Up Lori's iPod request-posts and the recent Fill Up Lori's Netflix Queue post is that for the Netflix there'll definitely be a delayed reaction. I had about 15 items there before y'all's excellent recommendations, and it's going to take some time for me to get down to item 96 on the old queue.

Last night I watched "Red Eye" because ever since "Batman Begins" I've had this borderline fascination with Cillian Murphy. It was ehh. Oddly toothless for a Wes Craven film. And I could not stop thinking about how much Rachel McAdams resembled a softer version of Jennifer Garner. I mean, a LOT. Squint and it's like you're watching "Alias." Especially when she jammed a pen into someone's throat. That's totally something Sydney would do. I also watched "De-Lovely" which I taped off HBO last week. I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. It was a bit bland and artificial. I can't really say why it didn't do it for me. And Kevin Kline cannot sing, which is weird because I always thought he could...unless he was putting on not-singing because Cole Porter wasn't much of a singer. Which is great for verisimilitude, but since he sang most of the songs himself it was rather harrowing on the viewer (read: me) to have to hear him screech and warble in an unattractively atonal fashion. But you know who was in it? John Barrowman! Captain Jack himself, who CAN sing, and quite awesomely!

I had to laugh at myself, though...I kept waiting for them to talk about Porgy 'n Bess and they never did. Then after the movie was over I remembered that Gerswhin wrote Porgy 'n Bess. *facepalm* I was also STUNNED by something...I'm not terribly familiar with Cole Porter's output (except the really well-known stuff, and the "Kiss Me Kate" stuff) and I had no idea that "Make 'Em Laugh" from "Singin' in the Rain" was so BLATANTLY plagiarized from Porter's "Be a Clown." I mean, seriously, y'all...it's the same song. With different words. How'd they ever get away with that? Porter was still alive when "Singin' in the Rain" was made!

I also had "High School Musical" from Netflix because I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I got five minutes into it before the eye-rolling and cringing was starting to hurt, so I turned it off. Seriously? THIS was the big phenomenon? I don't get it. I must be missing something, which wouldn't be unusual.

So to sum up my evening: cooked dinner, watched two movies and a TNG episode, got a lot of stitching done, did two loads of laundry, wrote ten pages, posted new chapter, watched (but mostly fast-forwarded through) the "So You Think You Can Dance?" results show (my love for Benji knows no bounds, yo) and checked in on my friend who just had a baby. Not bad for a Thursday.

Weekend plans: kitchen reorganization. More stitching. Hopefully more writing. Sunday, hoping for girly time with rachet and Alyzan the Mighty, who is in town for the weekend (no one ever stays at my house anymore, sniff sniff).

Did have a bit of a milestone last night. I signed my new lease. With only my name on it. *sob*,
