Last night I watched (and tonight am DVRing for Rachel) the Werner Herzog documentary "Grizzly Man," about the life and death of Timothy Treadwell, who spent 13 summers communing with grizzly bears on Alaska's Kodiak Island and who, in 2003, was killed and eaten by one, as was his girlfriend. The doccie is up for an Oscar this year, and the Discovery Channel has gotten exclusive broadcast right. I'm sure they'll be replaying it...watch for it, though I'd recommend taping it because the commercials, they were many. They have it in a 3-hour timeslot, but that also included a half-hour-long segment at the end, after the film, where Tim's friends discuss the film, which was also interesting.
I just don't know what to think about this man's life. In a way he seems like some kind of man-child, searching for that perfect union with nature, romanticizing the world of the bears and making it into something he finds lacking in the human world. One detects a hint of hubris in him...he often speaks about protecting the bears, and you can tell he fancies himself some kind of superhero, and fully expects that the bears would be grateful and recognize that he's their soul-brother or something. It's naive, but charming in its way. I find it incredible that he managed to not get eaten for THAT long. He did get some really amazing footage of the bears, not to mention incredible still photographs.
Anyway. Keep a lookout for it on the TiVo.
In other news, TEH CRACKFIC still owns my brain. I posted chapter 14 last night, which proved to be the most commented-on chapter ever. And these readers are leaving these loooooong comments, which is kinda nice, and getting into fights with each other in the comments, which is not so nice. And today I found out that TEH CRACKFIC has its own thread on the ff.net forum. *boggles*
